Today Swedish massage is widely enjoyed for its many benefits and unique style. The Swedish Massage session will typically begin on a massage table, the client fully unclothed and professionally draped. Oils or lotions are applied during the Five Swedish techniques known as; Effleurage, Petrissage, Friction, Vibration and Tapotement. Effleurage is a slow, soothing, glide that skims the skin and stimulates venous blood flow and lymphatic. Petrissage softens fascia by kneading soft tissue which softens fascia and decreases tension. Friction is simply small and deep movements in a localized area which breaks up tension, adhesions and brings nutrients and oxygen to the tissue. Vibration stimulates nerve activity and internal organs by fine tremulous movement. Tapotement is a tapping, cupping and hacking to stimulate the nervous system and tone muscle. This combination of techniques that is known as Swedish massage not only relaxes the muscles but stretches fascia which prevents the formation of adhesions. The alleviation of pain and increase in range of motion from a Swedish massage creates a better sense of well being.
